On Monday, the Washington Redskins announced that they will be “retiring” their controversial nickname, and that owner Dan Snyder and head coach Ron Rivera “are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years.” ESPN reports that a Native American designed Washington’s logo in 1971, but that the team’s 87-year-old nickname came to be viewed as offensive by many. The franchise is expected to retain its burgundy and gold color scheme, while trademark issues are reportedly responsible for the delay in announcing a new name. Snyder had resisted changing the nickname for years, but is now said to be “excited” by his about-face.
