A sergeant with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for driving under the influence in Colorado, the VSO announced on Wednesday. Steven Edgecomb, a 20-year employee of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, has already faced preliminary consequences for his alleged crime. The arrest occurred last week near Breckenridge, Colorado. The area is nearby I-70, about halfway in between Denver and Aspen. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office stopped Edgecomb after they reportedly saw him weaving in traffic. Prior to this arrest, the VSO says Edgecomb has no history of driving under the influence. He was hired with the Sheriff’s Office in 2006. An internal affairs investigation has been opened into Edgecomb’s arrest by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. This investigation will remain open until at least the conclusion of Edgecomb’s criminal case in Summit County, Colorado. In the meantime, Edgecomb has had his on-duty driving privileges revoked and has been relieved of all law enforcement duties, the VSO says. “While a member of law enforcement is entitled to the same due process rights as anyone else, we are sharing this arrest because we recognize law enforcement officers must be held to a higher standard than the general public,” the VSO said in a statement on Edgecomb’s arrest.
