Volusia County, FL – Deputies say a passerby located the body of a man believed to have died in an accident at the Tomoka Landfill. Deputies say the body of the deceased—who remains unidentified—was discovered by someone walking past the site on Wednesday (Feb. 16). A 911 call placed by employees around 10:15 a.m. is what brought the Volusia Sheriff’s Office to the landfill located just outside the Port Orange area. Investigators say the subject, identified only as a 57-year-old man, was controlling traffic in the area as he showed customers where to dump their materials. He appeared to have been run over by a bulldozer operating in the area, but deputies say there are no witnesses to the accident. Deputies have confirmed the identity of the victim, but because he has limited family in the area, next-of-kin has yet to be notified. In addition, the man was not a Volusia County employee, but a day laborer. The investigation remains active, but it’s likely charges won’t be filed as deputies say the incident appears to be a tragic accident. If any updates are provided, we’ll pass them along.
