A still of the suspect Deltona, FL – “Gotta go fast” was probably in the mind of a hammer-wielding robber wearing a Sonic the Hedgehog mask who was able to disappear before police arrived. Officers with the DeLand Police Department (DPD) were called to a Florida Credit Union branch on North Woodland Boulevard after learning of an armed robbery in progress. But when officers arrived at the bank, witnesses said the suspect—who was wearing a mask of Sonic the Hedgehog—had already run off. Witnesses say the suspect—who was likely male by the tone of his voice—walked into the bank with a hammer and demanded cash from the teller. At one point, he struck the teller’s window with the hammer before continuing his demands for money. After a confrontation with another bank employee, the suspect fled on foot. A search ensued and involved the DPD, and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office with aerial backup from Air One. Authorities were unable to locate the suspect. According to police, the suspect was last observed wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and the Sonic mask as he carried a black or gray bag. Anyone with information leading to the identification of this suspect is asked to contact Detective Tom Gillan with the DeLand Police Department by calling 386-626-7429.
