The Orange City Police Department on Tuesday shot a man said to be holding a knife inside of a Truist Bank. The man was hospitalized after the shooting, but as of Wednesday morning it remains unclear how severe his injuries are or whether he is expected to survive. He also remains unidentified. The incident reportedly began around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the 2500 block of Enterprise Road. Police came upon the man and are said to have given him commands to stop walking. He then allegedly ignored these commands and continued toward an area where three businesses were located. Further measures were attempted to stop the man, according to Acting Police Chief Jerome Miller. Further conversation was attempted and a taser was fired. Neither action appeared to stop his progress. “We tried to de-escalate the situation by verbally talking to him,” Miller said. “Also we used a taser, which was not effective at the time. He continued on down Enterprise [Road] here to Truist Bank.” There were other people in the bank when the shots were fired, but no one else is currently believed to have been injured. By the time the man entered the nearby Truist Bank location, he was already bleeding and holding a knife. Officers fired shots which disabled the man, and aid was rendered shortly thereafter, Miller said. Little information was given about the officer said to have fired the shots. Miller said he’s been with the Orange City Police Department for about one year. An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The Volusia Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
