BUNNELL, Fla. – The Flagler County School Board on Tuesday approved a resolution to appoint LaShakia Moore to the post of interim Superintendent, effective July 1st. Moore has served as the Assistant Superintendent under Cathy Mittelstadt since June 2022. The School Board last month voted against renewing Mittelstadt’s contract, in a 3-2 split that drew the ire of the majority of participating community members. Board member Sally Hunt was the deciding swing vote, following a series of events that included communications between her and former Flagler Palm Coast High School principal Dusty Sims about potentially taking the position. Moore was immediately viewed as one of the top candidates to serve as Superintendent in the interim, having worked close to Mittelstadt for a year and receiving usually positive feedback for her job performance from district staff and the Board itself. She was approved in a unanimous 5-0 vote to take the position, which she will hold until at least January 31st. In addition to approving Moore, the School Board also agreed to hire the Florida School Board Association to assist in the search for a permanent new Superintendent. A fee of $35,000 will be paid to the FSBA, and a successor will ideally be found during the 2023/24 school year. Prior to accepting a job at the district level, Moore was a three-year principal at Rymfire Elementary School.
