New Smyrna Beach, FL – Florida Highway Patrol says charges are pending against a driver who struck another car head-on on I-95, killing two and injuring three others, including themselves early Sunday morning (Oct. 24). The driver of the SUV that got hit, a 27-year-old Palm Bay woman, told troopers that they saw a Jeep Wrangler—piloted by a 24-year-old New Smyrna Beach man—driving northbound in the southbound lanes as they traveled south towards State Road 44. The woman tried to avoid the Jeep, but struck the front of the vehicle. A report from FHP says two of the SUV passengers—a 30-year-old male and a 27-year-old female, both from Palm Bay—were pronounced deceased at the scene. Another SUV passenger, a 29-year-old Palm Bay woman, was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The driver of the SUV and the driver of the Jeep both received only minor injuries. All patients were taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Troopers say the investigation into the crash remains active and ongoing as charges are pending against the driver of the Jeep. It is not clear if alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash. We will pass along updates as they come.
