29-year-old DeLand resident Giovanni Bubenik has been charged with attempted first-degree murder for an incident at a transient camp that left one victim in critical condition. The investigation that led to Bubenik’s arrest was ongoing from Saturday, March 15th until he was taken into custody on Friday. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Bubenik attacked the adult male victim by hitting him in the back of the head several times, and dug a grave for him. The incident occurred in a homeless camp near the intersection of International Speedway Blvd and Stone Street in DeLand. Bubenik was located and arrested where he was reportedly hiding at a residence on Evergreen Terrace. He was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Friday and remains in custody without bond. In addition to attempted first-degree murder, Bubenik is also charged with nonviolent obstruction of an officer. Since the attack, the victim is said to have regained his consciousness but with damage that will lead to long-term injuries and memory loss. Giovanni Bubenik has several prior jail bookings and criminal charges in Volusia County before this latest incident. Some offenses include child neglect, assault, battery, petty theft, battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash, and giving a false name to law enforcement among others.
