The director of a nursing home in DeBary has been arrested for allegedly stealing jewelry from one of his residents, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday. 45-year-old Shaun Burstein was charged with dealing in stolen property and theft between $300 and $10,000 against a person 65 years or older. The thefts in question occurred at the Arya at DeBary senior living home, just off Enterprise Road. A resident reported that an engagement ring was missing from their bedroom. This prompted a VSO investigation into the matter, and the examination of surveillance footage. When detectives examined the footage, they were said to have seen Burstein entering the room while no one was inside. He was allegedly shown on camera going over to where the resident’s jewelry box was, and then leaving. This was corroborated by another clip in which Burstein allegedly was shown trying to get the jewelry box open before he saw the camera and left. Next in the investigation was reviewing records from pawn shops nearby. Detectives were able to determine that Burstein had apparently taken more than one piece of jewelry, including the engagement ring, and sold them for a profit. These items were placed on hold, and the VSO says they eventually registered a positive on Burstein’s fingerprints. This methodology identified over 93 pieces of jewelry that Burstein allegedly sold between September 23rd and December 30th, 2025. Burstein was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Friday on two criminal charges. He was released on $10,000 bond about six hours later. He’s listed as a resident of Sanford, and has no prior arrest records in Volusia County. The Volusia Sheriff’s Office says their investigation into Burstein is still ongoing, and that only one victim has presently been identified. Those who believe themselves or a loved one may have also been victimized by Burstein are asked to contact Detective Patel by emailing ANPatel@volusiasheriff.gov.
