Don’t call them angels, but Priyanka Chopra and Megan Rapinoe are among the newest faces of Victoria’s Secret. Victoria’s Secret is getting rid of its Angels and wings. The company has hired new faces including the pink-haired U.S. soccer champ, Megan Rapinoe and the Indian actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas as it attempts one of the most extreme brand turnarounds in recent memory.
The New York Times reports: “For decades, Victoria’s Secret’s scantily-clad supermodels epitomized the height of femininity for millions. Now, the lingerie giant is not just trying to redefine itself — but also the very idea of what “sexy” is”.
On Wednesday, (June 16) the brand launched two initiatives, dubbed The VS Collective and The Victoria’s Secret Global Fund for Women’s Cancers.
Inaugural members of the new VS Collective are models, activists, athletes and artists from around the world.
Adding to the brand change is Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech, freestyle skier Eileen Gu, Brazilian transgender model Valentina Sampaio, plus-size model Paloma Elesser, and journalist Amanda de Cadenet, who will host a 10-episode podcast where each of the women will share their stories.
“When the world was changing, we were too slow to respond,” said Martin Waters, the former head of Victoria’s Secret’s international business who was appointed chief executive of the brand in February. “We needed to stop being about what men want and to be about what women want.”
