DeLand’s Keyan Rundell was arrested on Tuesday in connection to two murders in DeLand last week, the DeLand Police Department has announced. The 17-year-old murder suspect was taken into custody in Manatee County before being transferred to DeLand. Rundell is accused of fatally shooting two victims: 19-year-old Dustin Rose and 18-year-old Samson Campbell. Both men were found dead near the Athens Theatre in DeLand last week on the evening of July 29. “I am incredibly proud of how hard my team worked,” said Chief Jason D. Umberger. “Nearly 1,200 hours of personnel time was dedicated to this case in less than a week to find answers for these families.” Police announced Rundell as their suspect on Tuesday. He was described as armed and dangerous, with the public being advised not to approach him if they believe they’ve spotted him. Rundell is now facing two counts of second degree murder. Both victims were visiting their childhood homes from out of state; Rose served in the South Carolina National Guard, and Campbell recently moved to Chicago. A search warrant was served on August 1, with police apparently finding clothing and an e-bike that were connected to the murders. They also collected digital evidence which was said to shed light on where the suspect moved in the hours surrounding the incident. U.S. Marshals arrested Rundell on Florida’s Gulf Coast Tuesday morning with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The DeLand Police Department also credits the Volusia Sheriff’s Office and Seminole County Sheriff’s Office for their efforts to locate and apprehend Rundell. “We hope that this arrest can bring some sense of justice to the families for the tragic loss of life that they are experiencing,” Umberger continued. Police say “additional arrests are possible” as the investigation remains active. No motive or other suspects have yet been specified as of Thursday morning.
