26-year-old Trevon Miller has been convicted of two felony charges for a 2021 stabbing in Volusia County. Miller was accused of stabbing a correctional officer multiple times with an improvised knife. At the conclusion of a three-day trial, Miller was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer. Already prior to this latest conviction, Miller was serving a 30-year sentence for armed burglary, armed kidnapping, and sexual battery by force or deadly weapon from a 2016 conviction in Polk County. The case was investigated by the Florida Department of Corrections and the Officer of the Inspector General. Judge Kathryn Weston presided over Miller’s trial, with Managing Assistant State Attorney Erica Kane and Chief Assistant State Attorney John Reid prosecuting. On September 27, 2021, Miller was in custody at the Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach. He was reportedly shown on video surveillance hiding behind a door in a laundry room. Once Correctional Officer Paul Lane entered the room, a violent attack commenced. Miller is said to have ambushed Lane, stabbing him in the face, back, and neck. The knife was ‘homemade’ according to prosecutors. After the attack Miller is said to have returned to his dormitory and he was handcuffed by another officer. Fortunately, Lane recovered from his injuries after being hospitalized. There are no prior arrests on record for Miller in Volusia County aside from this attack. He’s listed in county records as a resident of Live Oak, Florida. “Correctional officers spend their days amongst some of the most violent and dangerous offenders,” said State Attorney R.J. Larizza. “They deserve our respect, praise, and protection. Let this case be a warning to other inmates that they will suffer greatly when they harm our correctional officers.”
