Residents of Volusia County will have the opportunity to dispose of old, unwanted tires at an upcoming disposal event on Saturday, April 18. The event is being held by the Volusia County Mosquito Control Division to help curb mosquito breeding. According to the Volusia County government old tires can become places where standing water can accumulate, creating prime areas for mosquitoes to lay eggs. The Mosquito Control Division will be collecting these tires to keep them from becoming a resource for mosquito populations to expand. The event will be held on Saturday, April 18 at the Mosquito Control Division’s headquarters (801 South St, New Smyrna Beach). Collection will begin at 8:00 a.m. and last until 2:00 p.m. Those bringing tires will not be charged any fee. Up to 20 tires can be brought in. Tires being disposed of must be removed from their rims, and only residential tires are being accepted. Those dropping off tires will be asked to show proof of residence in Volusia County. This could come in the form of a driver’s license or other government-issued ID. More information about the Volusia County Mosquito Control Division’s tire amnesty event is available at the county government website.
