A DeBary resident is in custody in connection to a shooting that took place in DeLand on Sunday, the DeLand Police Department has announced. One victim was injured in the shooting, which took place at around 2:58 am Sunday morning. The suspected shooter is 23-year-old Dawson Summer. According to the DPD’s report on the incident, Summers and the victim knew each other prior to the shooting. Police were called to a party at 610 N. Kentucky Ave, where they found the victim with two gunshot wounds. Summers was still at the scene when police arrived, and he was placed under arrest then and there. According to the DPD, both parties had been drinking before the shooting. Eventually, the victim reportedly challenged Summers to a fight. Summers is said to have gone out to his vehicle to get a firearm, started to fight the victim, and eventually fired two shots into him. Detectives investigating the shooting interviewed witnesses, and the firearm believed to have been used was found in the house’s laundry room. Summers was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail Sunday morning, where he remains as of Monday on no bond. Prior to Sunday, Summers has two other bookings on record at the county jail. In 2020 he was charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated stalking. He was then booked again in 2021 for violation of probation. As of Monday the shooting remains under active investigation. More details will be reported as they become available.
