The Volusia Sheriff’s Office last week arrested 22-year-old Seville resident Anthony Handam for allegedly driving at over double the speed limit on County Road 3 in DeLeon Springs. He was charged under a Florida law enacted on July 1st which enhances penalties for drivers speeding above a certain threshold. Under the new law, drivers can be criminally charged if they’re caught driving either 50 miles per hour over the speed limit over 100 miles per hour anywhere. The first person charged under the law was clocked at 104 miles per hour on I-4 in Orange County, just minutes after the law took effect. According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Handam did have that speed topped. He was accused of driving 105 miles per hour in a 45 mph speed limit zone. This means, if guilty, he simultaneously met both of the criteria that put a motorist in violation of the Super Speeder law. “Was I really going 105 miles an hour?” Handam can be heard asking a deputy in bodycam footage released by the VSO. “C’mon,” the deputy responded to him. “Are you that dumb?” Handam said he wasn’t monitoring his speed while driving on CR-3 on Wednesday. Handam was ordered out of his car, being told during the process to stay away from a knife a deputy apparently noticed inside. He was then told about the new law, and he was heard saying he hadn’t heard about it before. After being handcuffed and arrested, Handam was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail on a reckless driving charge. He was released on Thursday after posting his $1,000 bond. Prior to this incident Handam has no prior arrest record in Volusia County.
