The Volusia Sheriff’s Office this weekend arrested 25-year-old Winderson Emiliano Baez Vasquez after he reportedly pointed a gun at another motorist on I-4, the agency announced on Monday. Baez Vasquez was reportedly identified as being an undocumented migrant from the Dominican Republic who entered the country at the U.S.-Mexico border six years ago. The incident began after 5:00 pm on Saturday, when a 911 call came in about a road rage incident. The caller said that a passenger in a black Acura stood up with his body out of the sunroof, before then aiming a firearm at their vehicle. According to the VSO, the two vehicles were almost in an accident before that as they traveled westbound on I-4 in Daytona Beach. While the encounter was said to have started with horn-honking and hand gestures between the two vehicles, Baez Vasquez’s alleged threat was an escalation that necessitated the involvement of law enforcement. The Acura was found and Baez Vasquez, initially identified as a John Doe, was questioned by the VSO. Baez Vasquez reportedly did not have identification he could provide to law enforcement, and was said to have told deputies his name was Wilton Vargas Jr. Deputies reached out to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Border Patrol before arresting and transporting Baez Vasquez to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, improper display of a weapon, marijuana possession, and obstruction of an officer without violence. For both the assault charge and his classification as an illegal immigrant Baez Vasquez was denied bond.
