Leonardo DiCaprio Pledges $5 Million to Help Amazon Fires

Leonardo DiCaprio has committed $5 million to help aid the fires in the Amazon rainforest. According to Deadline, the Oscar winner and environmental activist announced the donation by reposting a series of images from the Amazon on Instagram from Earth Alliance, an organization he started with philanthropists Laurene Powell Jobs and Brian Sheth. They launched the Amazon Forest Fund that is seeking donations to repair the damage in the Amazon, with 100 percent of the donations going to help protect the rainforest. “Earth Alliance is committed to helping protect the natural world,” he captioned the photos. “We are deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis in the Amazon, which highlights the delicate balance of climate, biodiversity, and the wellbeing of indigenous peoples.” Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) says more than 72,000 fires have been reported this year, which is a major increase from last year’s 40,000 fires.
